United Way - Non-Traditional Financial Practices Research

United Way of London & Middlesex is working on better understanding and documenting the payday lending and non-traditional financial practices in our community. Building on and complementing the work underway with our colleagues at the City of London, we are trying to understand the effects of payday lending and non-traditional financial practices on people living in Poverty in London and Middlesex. We have engaged the Centre for Community Based Research (CCBR), who has done similar work in this area in the Kitchener-Waterloo region, to conduct a research study in London and Middlesex on the issue of payday lending.

CCBR will be using multiple methods to gather data, including: surveys with payday lending borrowers and service agencies, case study interviews, and key informant interviews. We ask that you assist in the recruitment of payday loan borrowers for the face to face or online survey and case study interviews.

Between now and February 29th we would like your help in promoting the survey and recruiting people who have experience with payday lenders and other services provided by payday lenders. We would ask that you direct these individuals to fill out the online survey or ask them to contact Liliana Araujo (survey link and contact info provided on flyer). We would like to conduct some interviews face-to-face, so we ask that you help in recruiting individuals who the CCBR research team can interview.

Please note that all client information will be confidential. Participants will also receive the following honoraria:
• online survey participants will have the chance to enter in a draw to win one of seven gift cards;
• participants who participate in a face-to-face interview will each receive a $10 gift card

The findings of this research will help us in understanding the payday lending practices in our community. The research will also inform about the next steps for United Way's mobilizing, investing, and advocacy efforts in London and Middlesex.

Please find attached a poster outlining the details of this study.

We will appreciate your support in directing clients to the online survey.
